MADRID: Spain was eyeing the Davis Cup final on Friday after David Ferrer defeated Andy Roddick in a five-set thriller to give the home side a 2-0 lead over defending champions United States at the end of the first day of their semi-final.
Earlier, world number one Rafael Nadal outclassed 39th ranked Sam Querrey 6-7 (5/7) 6-4, 6-3, 6-4, before fifth-ranked Ferrer came from behind to defeat the big-hitting Roddick 7-6 (7/5), 2-6, 1-6, 6-4, 8-6.
Roddick, who hits 23 aces to the Spaniard's 10, appeared to have the match under control after he overwhelmed Ferrer in the second and third sets.
